integrative narrative
I have always had a passion for languages and other cultures and before coming to CSUMB I already knew I wanted to pursue that passion as a Japanese translator. I came into CSUMB as a freshman in 2015 with next no experience with studying the Japanese language and immediately fell in love with the community of the Japanese language department.
Thanks to my studies at CSUMB and abroad, through courses such as Japanese 300 and Japanese 401: Structure of the Japanese Language I have strengthened my language abilities meeting MLO 1. While my initial goal was centered just around learning the language overtime my interest in having more well-rounded knowledge of Japan has increased and by taking courses such as JAPN 212: Samurai Spirit and JAPN: 314 Japanese Visual Culture and Media I have succeeded in cultivating my knowledge of Japanese culture and history while completing MLO 2. Additionally by pursuing MLO 3 and taking secondary culture courses such as SPAN 309: History and Politics of Latin America I have increased my intercultural competency outside the realm of just Japan. furthermore through classes such as WLC: 300 and JAPN 420 I have increased my technological competency alongside the goal of MLO 4. The biggest impact however was the pursuit of MLO 5 through my time studying abroad at Ristumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan.
While the importance of more well rounded competency and knowledge has been impressed upon my most proud achievement would definitely have to be my progress with the Japanese language. I am very grateful for my time studying at CSUMB as it has enabled me to gain a better understanding of Japan both linguistically and culturally. I hope to return to Japan in order to continue my education of the language and people, and eventually achieve the language proficiency for my longterm goal of becoming a translator.
